Quick answer
Only some blood tests need fasting: fasting blood sugar (8–10 hours), lipid profile (10–12 hours), iron studies (8–12 hours) and full body checkup packages (10–12 hours). Plain water is allowed. Tests like CBC, HbA1c, thyroid, vitamin D, creatinine and HIV need no fasting.

What “fasting” actually means
Fasting means no food and no drinks other than plain water. Tea, coffee (even black), milk, juice, soft drinks, chewing gum and tobacco can all affect results and should be avoided during the fasting period.
Drinking plain water is not only allowed but encouraged — it keeps you hydrated and makes the veins easier to find.
Do’s before your blood test
- Book an early morning slot (6–9 AM) for fasting tests so you can sleep through most of the fast.
- Drink 1–2 glasses of water in the morning.
- Wear a loose, half-sleeve shirt so the arm is easy to access.
- Carry your doctor’s prescription and a list of your medicines.
- Collect a first-morning, mid-stream urine sample if a urine test is booked.
Don’ts before your blood test
- Do not fast for more than 14 hours — very long fasts can distort results.
- Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before the test.
- Avoid heavy exercise the day before (it can affect creatinine and liver enzymes).
- Do not stop prescribed medicines without asking your doctor.
Should I take my medicines before a blood test?
Most medicines can be continued. The common exceptions: take thyroid tablets after the sample, and ask your doctor about diabetes tablets or insulin on the morning of a fasting test, since taking them without food can cause low sugar. Iron, vitamin and biotin supplements may need to be paused 1–3 days before — check with your doctor.
