What is the LFT Test?

A Liver Function Test (LFT) is a group of blood tests that shows how well your liver is working. The liver processes nutrients, makes proteins, clears toxins and produces bile — and liver problems often cause no symptoms until they are advanced.

Our LFT includes 11 parameters: bilirubin (total, direct and indirect), SGOT, SGPT, GGT, alkaline phosphatase, total protein, albumin, globulin and the A/G ratio.

What it measures: Liver enzymes (SGOT/AST, SGPT/ALT, ALP, GGT), bilirubin and liver-made proteins (albumin, globulin).

Parameters included (11)

  • Total Bilirubin
  • Direct Bilirubin
  • Indirect Bilirubin
  • SGOT (AST)
  • SGPT (ALT)
  • Gamma GT (GGT)
  • Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP)
  • Total Protein
  • Albumin
  • Globulin
  • A/G Ratio

Why is this test done?

  • Detecting fatty liver, hepatitis and other liver diseases early
  • Evaluating jaundice (yellow eyes or skin)
  • Monitoring people who drink alcohol regularly
  • Checking the effect of long-term medicines on the liver
  • Part of yearly full body checkups

When should you get tested?

  • Yellowing of eyes or skin (jaundice) or dark urine
  • Loss of appetite, nausea or vomiting
  • Pain or heaviness in the upper right abdomen
  • Swelling of legs or abdomen
  • Regular alcohol intake, obesity or diabetes

How to prepare for the LFT Test

  1. 1No fasting is required unless your doctor advises it (it is needed when taken in a package).
  2. 2Avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours before the test.
  3. 3Tell our staff about medicines and supplements you take.

LFT Test normal range

ParameterTypical reference range
Total bilirubin0.3–1.2 mg/dL
Direct bilirubin0–0.3 mg/dL
SGOT (AST)5–40 U/L
SGPT (ALT)7–56 U/L
Alkaline phosphatase (ALP)40–120 U/L
Total protein6.0–8.3 g/dL
Albumin3.5–5.0 g/dL
A/G ratioMore than 1.0

Ranges are typical adult values and vary between labs, age and sex. Always use the range printed on your report and discuss results with your doctor.

Understanding your results

  • Raised SGPT (ALT) is the most common finding in fatty liver disease, which is increasingly common in people with diabetes or obesity.
  • High bilirubin causes jaundice; whether direct or indirect bilirubin is raised helps the doctor find the cause.
  • Low albumin can indicate long-standing liver disease, kidney disease or poor nutrition.

LFT Test – FAQs

What is the price of the LFT Test?

The Liver Function Test (LFT) costs ₹650 at Live Line Health Care, at all 45 centres and for home sample collection.

Is fasting required for a liver function test?

Fasting is not mandatory for an LFT on its own. If it is done with a lipid profile or as part of a health package, fast for 10–12 hours.

What are SGOT and SGPT?

SGOT (AST) and SGPT (ALT) are liver enzymes. When liver cells are damaged — for example by fatty liver, hepatitis or alcohol — these enzymes leak into the blood and their levels rise.

Can LFT detect fatty liver?

An LFT can show raised liver enzymes that suggest fatty liver, but an ultrasound is usually needed to confirm it.

How many tests are included in your LFT?

Our LFT includes 11 parameters: total, direct and indirect bilirubin, SGOT, SGPT, GGT, alkaline phosphatase, total protein, albumin, globulin and A/G ratio.

Where can I get the LFT Test done?

At any of our 45 Live Line Health Care centres in 40 cities across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, including Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam, Warangal, Kakinada and Nellore — or book home sample collection.
