Also known as: Complete Blood Count, Haemogram, Hemogram, CBP, Complete Blood Picture

What is the CBC Test?

A CBC (Complete Blood Count), also called a haemogram or CBP (Complete Blood Picture), is the most commonly ordered blood test in India. It counts and measures the three main types of cells in your blood — red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets.

Because it reflects so many body systems at once, doctors use the CBC for routine health checkups, for evaluating fever and infections, for detecting anaemia, and for monitoring chronic conditions and medicines.

What it measures: Haemoglobin and red cell indices (oxygen-carrying capacity), total and differential white cell count (immunity and infection) and platelet count (blood clotting).

Parameters included (13)

  • Haemoglobin
  • Packed Cell Volume (PCV)
  • RBC Count
  • MCV
  • MCH
  • MCHC
  • Total WBC Count
  • Neutrophils
  • Lymphocytes
  • Eosinophils
  • Monocytes
  • Basophils
  • Platelet Count

Why is this test done?

  • Screening for anaemia (low haemoglobin), which is very common in Indian women and children
  • Evaluating fever, infections and inflammation
  • Checking platelet count during viral fevers such as dengue
  • Routine yearly checkups and pre-surgery evaluation
  • Monitoring treatment that can affect blood cells (for example chemotherapy or some long-term medicines)

When should you get tested?

  • Constant tiredness, weakness or breathlessness
  • Pale skin, dizziness or fast heartbeat
  • Fever that keeps coming back or frequent infections
  • Easy bruising, nosebleeds or bleeding gums
  • Unexplained weight loss

How to prepare for the CBC Test

  1. 1No fasting is required — you can eat and drink normally.
  2. 2Drink water so the veins are easy to find.
  3. 3Tell our staff about any medicines, especially blood thinners.

CBC Test normal range

ParameterTypical reference range
HaemoglobinMen: 13.0–17.0 g/dL · Women: 12.0–15.0 g/dL
RBC countMen: 4.5–5.5 · Women: 3.8–4.8 million/µL
Packed Cell Volume (PCV)Men: 40–50% · Women: 36–46%
MCV83–101 fL
Total WBC count4,000–11,000 /µL
Platelet count1.5–4.5 lakh/µL

Ranges are typical adult values and vary between labs, age and sex. Always use the range printed on your report and discuss results with your doctor.

Understanding your results

  • Low haemoglobin with low MCV usually points to iron-deficiency anaemia; low haemoglobin with high MCV can suggest vitamin B12 or folate deficiency.
  • A high WBC count is often seen with bacterial infection or inflammation, while a low WBC count can occur in viral infections.
  • A low platelet count during fever needs prompt medical review, especially in the dengue season.

CBC Test – FAQs

What is the price of the CBC Test?

The CBC Test (Complete Blood Count) costs ₹350 at Live Line Health Care, at all 45 centres and for home sample collection.

Is fasting required for a CBC test?

No. A CBC does not need fasting. You can eat and drink normally before the test.

Are CBC and CBP the same test?

Yes. CBC (Complete Blood Count), CBP (Complete Blood Picture) and haemogram are different names for the same test.

Can a CBC detect dengue?

A CBC cannot confirm dengue, but a falling platelet count and low WBC count are typical findings. Doctors use the CBC to monitor platelets while specific dengue tests confirm the infection.

What does low haemoglobin mean?

Low haemoglobin means anaemia. The most common cause is iron deficiency, but vitamin B12 or folate deficiency, blood loss and chronic illness can also cause it. Your doctor may advise iron studies or a vitamin B12 test.

Where can I get the CBC Test done?

At any of our 45 Live Line Health Care centres in 40 cities across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, including Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam, Warangal, Kakinada and Nellore — or book home sample collection.
