What is the Iron Studies Test?

Iron Studies (Iron Profile) include Serum Iron, TIBC (Total Iron Binding Capacity) and Transferrin Saturation. Together they show how much iron is circulating in your blood and how well it is being transported.

Iron-deficiency anaemia is the most common nutritional deficiency in India, affecting a large share of women, adolescents and children. Iron studies help confirm it — and also detect iron overload.

What it measures: Serum iron, total iron binding capacity (TIBC) and transferrin saturation (TS %).

Parameters included (3)

  • Serum Iron
  • Total Iron Binding Capacity (TIBC)
  • Transferrin Saturation (TS %)

Why is this test done?

  • Confirming iron-deficiency anaemia when haemoglobin is low
  • Evaluating fatigue, hair fall and breathlessness
  • Monitoring iron supplements or injections
  • Detecting iron overload

When should you get tested?

  • Tiredness, weakness and breathlessness on exertion
  • Hair fall, brittle nails or pale skin
  • Craving to eat ice, mud or chalk (pica)
  • Heavy menstrual bleeding

How to prepare for the Iron Studies Test

  1. 1Overnight fasting of 8–12 hours is preferred.
  2. 2Give the sample in the morning, as iron levels vary through the day.
  3. 3Stop iron supplements 24 hours before the test if your doctor agrees.

Iron Studies Test normal range

ParameterTypical reference range
Serum iron60–170 µg/dL
TIBC250–450 µg/dL
Transferrin saturation20–50%

Ranges are typical adult values and vary between labs, age and sex. Always use the range printed on your report and discuss results with your doctor.

Understanding your results

  • Low iron with high TIBC and low transferrin saturation is the classic pattern of iron deficiency.
  • High iron and high transferrin saturation may suggest iron overload and need further evaluation.
